My contributions

byswfreakforever2 years ago

Boy am I glad I stumbled upon this add-on!

For the past few months, I've been using a combination of QuestHelper, TourGuide, Wowhead, WoWWiki, and a few 150 pg. notepads to start tracking quests and creating guides for TourGuide. While questFlux doesn't yet have the customizable steps like TourGuide, I'm liking what I've seen so far and have faith that the creator can come close if not overcome the features and customization of TourGuide.

In the last couple of days I have been on the long road to quest recording/guide creation, contributing new quests and guides to this small community. For those that haven't seen any of my submissions, below is a starting list, as well as future plans.

Undead DK - Plaguelands: The Scarlet Enclave
DK - Hellfire Peninsula
DK - Zangarmarsh - Coming soon!!

My goal is to finish the DK series with my Undead toon, so that I may start a new toon from scratch and add the beginning quests. I eventually plan to have every quest contributed that is missing from the database, both Horde and Alliance.

In closing, I will make a few suggestions based on my experience with TourGuide and the customizable tasks that are missing from questFlux.

Location task - questFlux has one in place, but I feel TG's is a bit better, as it identifies the exact spelling of an area when your character runs through it or discovers it. The same would go for any offshoot of the Location task, such as Flying, setting and using the Hearthstone, finding a new Flight Path, using the Zeppelin, the boat, a portal, ect.

Buy task - Several quests require the player to buy items from vendors and/or AH in order to complete the quest.

Use task - A lot of quests require the player to use a quest-given item in order to complete the quest.

And of course, the big one that is already being worked on -

Conditional quests - Race, profession, faction, etc.

I'm done critiquing and introducing myself. Please check out my guides, submit improvements/changes, and have fun!

Hey, I'm also very glad that you stumbled upon my add . And you already uploaded quite a number of quests - thanks for that. So here are my thoughts about your suggestions ...

In general most of your wished features are not a problem at all - so I guess they will be implented all at once as their internal functionality is nearly the same. Including your suggestions I have the following on my list:

- Hearthstone
- Sell and Repair
- Flight Points and Boats (that might take a few weeks to gather them all)
- Item Buy
- profession level, achievements

The usage of quest items is already implented (for objectives as well as for the pick-up of quests), but the addon still has some problems to record some of those items. If you have some quests in mind that lack their corresponding quest items, please give me a note and I will add those items manually.

The triggering of sub-areas on the map is an interesting thought, although it might blow up memory usage a bit as there are no internal area id's for map zones. But still, it is no big deal and I'm considering to add this feature as well.

Hmm, what else ... ughh, right, you don't have to start a new toon just to add some missing quests to your guides. If those quests are already contributed you can use the Online Editor to manually insert them into your guides.

And one last thing - I will surely test out your guides with one of my toons to give you some feedback, but as a guide author myself I know the most important (and satisfying) thing is a rising number of downloads and comments. So if you know some players (maybe some guild members) to test out your guides, just go ahead and spread the word :-)

I realized this morning that at the time of my post, I was on my way to bed and that my post seemed a little negative towards this project of yours. I do apologize, as I am quite pleased with its versatility and usefulness. What pleased me most, was the seamless way that quests can be recorded and then submitted for easy guide creation. Also, the fact that I can cut out writing quests down on paper and then transfer them to a Notepad file, is much easier to handle. It makes playing WoW while creating a guide less of a chore.

In short, keep up the good work. This add-on definitely has enormous potential to become a strong contender against QuestHelper and TourGuide.

As for my current projects, they are basic guides with no flare - flare which I intend on adding as the options become available to me.

For now, my main goals are simple:

1: Contribute missing quests
2: Create cookie-cutter guides which can be added to later

Don't mind that - I never felt your post to be some kind of negative. And you are contributing quests at lightning speed - you can say whatever you want as long as you keep up your great work

No, seriously, I'm pretty amazed of how fast you are cleaning up the outland areas. In fact that is some kind of double pleasure for me as I have a few toons ready to enter outland that I can use now to gather the german counterparts of your quests just by replaying your guides on the german client. So your work is really appreciated!

And I promise to do my best to get all the wished features working - even if it may actually look like the development of the project is not getting any further ... I'm working on it!

Now that I'm almost finished with the Outland quests, I'm going to take a break before heading into Shadowmoon Valley, and take my level 70 back to the beginning of time and work on the regular quests in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms. Since I had already created guides for most of the zones using TourGuide, this will go rather quickly for me.

Also, until further notice regarding the addition of conditional quests, specifically racial and class-based quests, I will be creating these guides from an Undead's perspective. As I do with all of my guides, I will clearly label the guides with information regarding class/race specifics, so that others will know what to do.

Here is my proposed guide creation schedule before hopping back on the Outland train:

Tirisfal Glades - Undead Specific
Silverpine Forest
Eversong Woods
Ghostlands
Durotar
Mulgore
The Barrens
Stonetalon Mountains
Ashenvale
Hillsbrad Foothills
Thousand Needles
Desolace
Alterac Mountains
Arathi Highlands

Then:

Shadowmoon Valley
Netherstorm
Isle of Quel'Denas
Howling Fjord
Borean Tundra
Dragonblight
Grizzly Hills
Crystalsong Forest
Zul'Drak
Sholazar Basin
The Storm Peaks
Ice Crown

Then:

Remaining low-level quests and quest clean-up, which will include dungeon quests as well.

When those tasks are complete (and only when), I will go back and edit my guides, including adding additional information and help tips.

I also will go back and pick out quests that require item use and log those for this community's benefit and possible future improvements.

OK, tonight marked the completion of the Arathi Highlands guide which will be the last guide located in either Eastern Kingdoms or Kalimdor until the completion of the Outlands and Northrend guides.

I have started on Netherstorm, and then will finish out Outlands with Isle of Quel'Danas before moving onto Northrend.

I hope to have the Outlands guides finished up before the end of the weekend, but who knows what may happen.

That sounds great! I'm pretty sure to get the new site-design working till sunday, so this weekend will be the starting point of some changes regarding the site's functionality (that even might reward your recording work in some way by pushing the downloads during the next weeks).

Ok, the majority of the Outlands guides have been completed and posted. I'm starting on Howling Fjord this morning and hope to have it completed by this evening or tomorrow evening sometime.
